Troublesome PL8s
I stumbled across this socially relevant AP story on FoxNews’ Web site yesterday while conducting unrelated research on white people, fear-mongering and latent racism in the 21st century.
North Carolina’s state DMV received a complaint about a potentially offensive series of license plates that were slowly but surely (i.e., arguably) causing a stir among Tar Heel State motorists.
“Thanks to some text message-savvy grandchildren, North Carolina drivers whose license plates have the potentially offensive ‘WTF’ letter combination can replace the tags for free. […]
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday the state Division of Motor Vehicles has notified nearly 10,000 holders of license plates with the letter combination. Officials learned last year the common acronym stands for a vulgar phrase in e-mail and cell phone text messages.”
Yeah. It took a 60-year-old technology teacher’s grandchildren to explain exactly why everyone in the state might be offended. This is so wonderfully ironic, because everyone who could conceivably have been offended by this would have been too old to get it, and everyone who would have understood it could have enjoyed a good roffle on the interstate.
I applaud FoxNews for picking up this story, although it’s clearly a ploy to redirect hits from Google searches for the phrase “FoxNews + WTF.”
